Bandrek

Ayam Bakar in Wong Solo was my ideal dish during my first visit to Medan in 2005. It doesn't taste like any other ordinary grilled chicken. It was very fresh and new taste for me backed then and even now it still is.

There will always be a new discovery and delightful food for each visit to Medan. Bakso Amat was the ideal dish during my second visit. Even though the interior of the shop wasn't like a high-end restaurant, it was the beef noodle itself that captured my attention. The aroma of the soup and the texture of the meatball is really irresistible.

I couldn't name those foods in order after my so many visits there. There are Mie Kankung Belancan, Pisang Bakar, Bakmie Khek, Mie Hokkien (which is totally different from ours), Risol, Mee Ayam and etc.

This time visit, it was Bandrek (Spiced Ginger Tea) that has got my full attention. The name itself is very special and unique. My preference is Bandrek Kosong, without milk in Jalan Gatot Subroto. This particular Bandrek tastes just nice, the smoky sweetness is just at the right amount to enhance the ginger. But it isn't just ginger and sugar that make the drink special. The use of Cinnamon, Star Anise, Cloves, Lemongrass, Coriander Seeds, Cardamom pods and Chillies that complete this drink. This spicy-sweet taste of Bandrek put me into a very sweet sleep and it tastes even better in a cold weather.
